Along with the wonderful Lisa Wright I welcomed a group of beautiful creatives to the Kingcombe Centre in west Dorset for a weekend of art, nature, good food and great company.

We explored the meadows of the nature reserve, looking at the many different plants that grow there, and the insects and other animals that depend on them. The reserve is managed with careful grazing by a herd of beef cattle at a very low density without adding artificial fertilisers to the land. This is the traditional method of farming before the advance of modern intensive agriculture and allows a huge variety of plants to flourish on the reserve, from grasses and medicinal herbs (giving rise to the term "wellground" as the medicinal properties benefited the animals grazing there) to several species of beautiful orchids.

Part of the reserve is also managed as traditional hay meadows, these are left until late in the summer to give the flowers and grasses a chance to set seed before being cut for hay. These fields are literally buzzing with insects on a warm day, it is a sound, and sight, from the past that is hard to find these days. Although it wasn't the best insect weather (typical British summer really!) we saw several species of butterflies and moths, lots of hoverflies and even a few bees.

The studio at Kingcombe is a beautiful, light space that is perfect for getting creative after being inspired by the colours of the countryside. We created some easy no-sew journals based on this tutorial to turn into a record of the weekend interpreting the landscape around us. Gradually, over the weekend the pages were filled with paintings and prints, as a colourful reminder of everything we had seen.

Lisa also taught everyone the basics of iphonography and how to edit pictures using various different apps to create new works of art from our photographs. This is something I haven't really tried before and it was lovely to learn something new that can give such quick results.

In the evenings we gathered around a bonfire to tell stories and sing songs. We used the storybowl method devised by Andrea Scher to give everyone a prompt that they could use to inspire a story. It was such a special atmosphere of connection with like-minded women, and I feel very lucky that I was able to help create the space for this to happen, and to share the experience which such lovely people.
Towards the end of last year I sold some of my work in person at a craft fair. It was a lovely experience to get to meet some of my customers in person and to be able to get feedback on the items I made from people who could see and touch them. I also ran a competition to win a £10 gift voucher for my shop for anyone wanting to sign up to receive my newsletter. It has taken me a long time to post the winner but without further ado...

Congratulations Karen Fearnley! Your name was picked at random by Baby Barnacle and I will be sending you an email shortly with your prize.

As the weather has been starting to get a bit more spring-like (even though the Easter weekend itself was a bit hit-and-miss!) we have managed to get down to the beach a few times recently. I love the chance to do a bit of beachcombing, and found quite a few tiny treasures among the surf.

Most of these will probably find their way into future art works in one form or another, with a few being suitable for jewellery. I have finished a few pieces made with some of my previous beach finds, and they will soon be available in the shop. Until they are do let me know here or via my facebook page if there is something that speaks to you.
I had seen the trailer for this lesson (you can watch it here) and it was one of the reasons I signed up for Lifebook this year, it looked like so much fun and I would love to be able to paint like that with Baby Barnacle (BB) when she's a bit older.

The idea is to paint collaboratively with your child, each taking a turn on the same canvas, and "you get what you get and you don't get upset"!

I love the idea of this way of working, because art brings me so much joy and I can already see the beginnings of that enjoyment in BB when she has a crayon or paintbrush in her hand. I decided we would have a go at the lesson, even though she is quite a bit younger than Tallulah, and just see what happened.

To begin with I sketched a quick face loosely based on a picture I found in a magazine. I added a little bit of paint in a few bright colours quite quickly; I thought "It doesn't matter what it looks like, it's just going to be painted over anyway". This is exactly the point of this type of "Fearless Art"! It is so freeing! There are no mistakes! It can all be painted over, and probably will be, again and again.

Once this had dried I put a few colours of acrylic paint on the palette and let BB loose with the brush!

This was the result...

It was at this point that the fear returned. How was I supposed to turn that back into a face? And did I even want to? Who was I to paint over my darling girl's expressive brushstrokes? Honestly this was far harder than letting her paint over what I had done to start with!

Eventually, I just started by adding a few of the details back in, the shape of the face and mouth, the eyes, adding some hair. It got a bit easier after that but I wanted to leave some of her marks visible. This was easy enough around the outside of the face, I just painted in a dark wash of Paynes Grey for the background, but it was much harder in the face itself. I wish now I'd left more of her marks in around the chin and jawline, but it was just a first attempt, I'm sure we'll be trying many more collaborations in the future!

I really learnt a lot from this way of working with her. If you have a remotely tame little one who can hold a paintbrush, or can borrow one for an hour or two, I'd definitely recommend trying a collaboration. You never know where it might take you, and that is half the fun! Let me know in the comments if you do have a go.

Annie and Tallulah are also running an online workshop beginning at the end of February. You can find all the details here.Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2368635373183863997.post-44319547536668065482016-01-21T21:07:00.000+00:002016-01-22T17:48:02.048+00:00A peek in my art journalI love art journalling. For me, it is a great way to give myself some creative time. I can be more free in my journal because it is just for me, I don't have to show anyone if I don't want to, and it does not ever have to be a finished product to be admired or sold.

A lot of my pages have never been seen by anyone other than me. Having said that, I'm happy to share some of them in journalling groups I belong to, usually when a page is a response to a certain theme. I also love seeing other people's pages and discussing different techniques, and I've found the online art journal community to be a wonderful, friendly place. Online sharing is a great way to encourage other people to have a go as well, so I plan on sharing some of my pages on my blog this year. Hopefully it might encourage any of you who want to begin an art journalling practice but don't know where to start!
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and were able to celebrate exactly how you wanted to. We had a lovely time with family and plenty of good food and drink, walks along the coast, Little O enjoying her new rocking horse, a bit of festive telly (some still waiting for a chance to watch it on catch up- no Downton spoilers please!), and now I'm feeling ready to go and excited about the year ahead.

I really want to thank everyone who supported my charity art auction for the Boat Refugee Foundation. (To read the background of why I decided to set it up read this post.) We had over 30 donations of art works and courses and in total raised just over £2,300. It is a cause that is still very close to my heart and I will continue to try and support them in whatever ways I can throughout 2016.
I have signed up to Tamara Laporte's Life Book this year, which I am really looking forward to as a regular art practice. I did take the course a few years ago, and I thought it was brilliant, and excellent value for money, but I only dipped in and out of the lessons as I never seemed to find the time. I'm hoping I will be able to at least try most of them this year, but I know myself better than to make any promises!

This is the page I created from Tam's warm-up lesson. If you are also taking Life Book this year and are posting your work online anywhere then leave me a link in the comments and I'll come and say hello!
This was partly inspired by reading Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic, well worth a read if you haven't already! I think it is going to be my mantra for the year!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2368635373183863997.post-73816388229023522252015-12-07T22:32:00.000+00:002015-12-07T22:32:52.351+00:00Charity Art AuctionI've been overwhelmed by the support I've received for the planned auction to raise money for Bootvluchteling. Over a dozen artists from all over the world have already promised to donate a piece to the cause, and there is still time if you would like to donate something, or know someone who would. Just get in touch and let me know.

The auction will take place on facebook from the 14th-16th December. Although there are some people who do not use facebook, I feel the advantages in terms of the ease of sharing the event outweigh this factor. The event page can be found here and photographs of all the pieces being auctioned will be listed here over the next week, along with information about the artists taking part. The link to the actual auction album will go live at the start of the auction. Bids can be made as comments on each item's photograph with the highest bid at the end of the auction winning the piece.
The auction is going live on Monday for 48 hours so there is still time to donate a piece if you would like to get involved. I feel so much pain and sadness every time the desperate images are shown, and with the omnipresent nature of social media the visual assault can come upon you at any time and cannot be unseen. I feel, and I'm sure many of you do too, so small and helpless in the face of such large scale distress, and have been feeling very uncomfortable about the fact that I'm not really doing anything that will make a difference.

Today, as my democratically elected government votes (presumably) to join the countries already dropping bombs on Syria and adding to the numbers of people fleeing their homes, a friend shared this picture on facebook, and I couldn't face another day of inaction.

This child is about the same age as my own daughter. It makes me feel sick that there are families having to go through this. I don't know what I would do if my baby was struggling in the water off a foreign shore because my home was being bombed to the ground. I cannot comprehend what these men, women and children are having to live through. They are people. They are HUMANS. And I feel like so many of those in power are not seeing them or do not care what is happening.

That photograph was shared from the page of a Dutch charity called Sichting Bootvluchteling (The Boat Refugee Foundation). They are working on Malta, Lesbos and Kos to help refugees arriving by boat. When I saw that today I felt like there was a tiny point of light in this terrible darkness and I realised what I can do. I can make art. And many of my friends can too. So I am going to organise a charity sale of artwork to raise funds for Bootvluchteling.

I haven't worked out all the details yet, I was initially thinking of using ebay for charity with a central account to list the items and each donor posting their artwork directly to the winning bidder. However the foundation is not registered with eBay for charity so I will look at all the options. I have already had a couple of wonderful, kind friends agree to donate a work and would love to hear from anyone else who would like to be involved. I want to get this up and running quickly to see if we can get these artworks out to their new homes in time for Christmas so do get in touch if you would like to donate or can help spread the word. I will post all the details as soon as I have them!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2368635373183863997.post-5090073221244120842015-12-01T23:42:00.000+00:002015-12-01T23:42:12.053+00:00It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... (Help!)

Happy first of December! Little one is a bit small to appreciate an advent calendar this year, but I'm looking forward to making her one next year. I feel like Christmas has suddenly crept up on me, and I still have so much to do. I always like to try and make a few presents, but this year I think I'll have to buy most of them, I just don't have enough time left! I always try to support other small businesses as much as I can, and I'm aiming to do a little gift guide in the next few days with some of my favourite handmade present ideas that have caught my eye recently.

I have been focussing on trying to get my business and website up and running properly over the last few weeks. I was made redundant from my day job so I'm taking the opportunity to try and make my living in a more creative way. I have been ticking off little jobs behind the scenes as part of the 100 day goal (we are on day 92!) and slowly feel like I'm getting there now. I even managed to attend a craft fair and sell a few paintings at the weekend!

I will be having a big website launch with a giveaway and some exciting new projects to share with you early in the new year. In the mean time I will try to maintain a more regular posting schedule here before Christmas! Now to figure out the practicalities of putting up a Christmas tree with a toddler in the house... Any suggestions gratefully received!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2368635373183863997.post-69213381988543294902015-09-21T21:51:00.003+01:002015-09-21T21:53:26.200+01:00Beachcombing; hunting for heartsA couple of days ago I went down to the beach after work for an hour to look for treasure. I've always loved collecting natural treasures, I was the kid with pockets full of shells and stones, the one who insisted that my parents make room in the car for my 'special' stick, or rock, or pinecone after every walk.

Beaches are some of my favourite places to scavenge. Well, some of my favourite places in general! I have almost always lived near the ocean, and I can't imagine living away from it for very long. I think my ancestors were mermaids...

I'm always on the lookout for interesting little trinkets that I can incorporate into new jewellery designs or my mixed media artworks. Pretty shells, stones, pieces of beach glass or plastic, old rope, rusty metal and driftwood are all fair game. These are a few of the shells and stones I collected, all washed by hand with an old toothbrush and laid out to dry in the sun. I'll try to remember to show you the photos of the final pieces these trinkets eventually become!

I have a particular love of heart shaped stones, and always look out for them. At the moment they are dotted around all over the house, on windowsills and shelves, in bags and pockets, but I'd like to gather them all up and display them together somehow. A little collection that can be constantly evolving and growing.

How do you display your collections of little treasures, whatever they may be? If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them!

The idea is that if you have a big goal you want to accomplish you break it down into tiny steps and work on them bit by bit for 100 days. Apparently that is the perfect length of time; long enough to achieve something big but not so long that you lose momentum. It officially began on the 1st of September, but there is still time to join in if you feel inspired, you can either change the dates to finish a couple of weeks later, or add in a couple of extra 'mini-goals' every day or two until you've caught up.

I thought this would be a brilliant way to get on track with setting up Velvet Barnacle into a proper business. I would love to be able to work from home one day and be able to spend more time with my little girl, so while I am working part-time at my day job I'm going to take the opportunity to work on my own business as well. There is so much I need to do, set up a website, reopen my shop on Etsy, photograph the work I have and create new pieces, get to grips with marketing and social media, the list is endless! (Well, at least it was easy to come up with a list of 100 mini-goals to tackle over the next 87 days!)

There is a great community of people all taking part in the 100 days, with a Facebook group to share all our problems and triumphs. It is a wonderful way to keep motivated, you are held accountable when other people know about your goals! There is also a lot of support if you are struggling and it is a great place to find people in a similar situation to bounce ideas off.

It is already helping me to get more done, as I feel really guilty if I miss a day! I'll keep you posted now and then with my progress. For now I have dusted off my Facebook page, and Instagram account, so feel free to have a look and tell me what you think!
It was up in Liverpool, a 5 hour drive from me, so it meant spending 3 nights away from Little O, the first time I had left her overnight. It was a bit nerve-wracking leaving her, I knew she'd be fine in the daytime but I was a bit worried about how my husband M would cope in the night without the easy option to breastfeed her back to sleep! In the end they were (of course!) both fine, so I needn't have worried.

Orly's workshop was called Hollow Spaces and we had the use of a wonderful studio belonging to Clare Campbell's Big Love Sista organisation. For a long time I have loved the idea of art journalling because a journal is a place where you can make a mess and play with no restrictions, no pressure and no need to show anyone or be open to any critique.

In theory.

Turns out I still have a huge inner critic with a need to create 'pretty' art that looks like other people's. I have only recently begun to make pages in my art journal that we're not trying to be finished works of art so I thought Orly's workshop would be a perfect way to loosen up and practice imperfection.

We started by layering colours over a whole spread and then pressing the pages against our neighbour's book, a great way to get over the fear of a blank page! The first morning was then spent covering some parts with gesso and leaving some parts visible. We even carved our own stamps, something I would love to do more of, I can see it becoming quite addictive!

In the afternoon Orly showed us lots of techniques to get images onto the page if you feel you are not great at drawing (hello!) Again, there was a focus on which spaces to leave and which to fill or cover. By the end of the day I was feeling more creative than I had in a long time and was amazed by how much everyone had achieved.
After the class finished for the day a few of us wandered around town for a bit, doing some very touristy things, and had dinner down by the docks.
Orly had given us a poem by David Whyte to take home that evening, put by our bed, and read first thing when we woke up. It is here if you'd like to read it. It is a wonderfully inspiring piece, and we had to incorporate some of the words into our pages on the second morning. After a while we were told to make a hole, a hollow space, on each side of the spread. "What?! Nooooo!" It was going to rip a chunk out of our hard work from the day before! But this is what it was all about for me, letting go. Embracing the impermanence and imperfection. It was so hard to rip that first hole without looking to see what I was losing on the other side! But it was also very freeing, and I think I got more from the workshop by doing my best to let go.
We also got the chance to play with fire and burn some holes into our pages. This is definitely something I would like to try again!
On the Saturday night it was the Brazilian carnival, so after out meal we staked out a spot on a corner to watch the procession. It was a wonderful atmosphere and the music and costumes were fantastic. I only had my phone with me, and as the light was going it was impossible to get many good photos with all the movement of the dancers.
The final day of the workshop was all about creating spreads putting together all we had learned. It felt very scary to start work on a new page from scratch without Orly telling us what to do! I soon got into it though, and the spread I created that morning ended up being one of my favourites of the whole workshop.
We ended the weekend with a visit to St. Luke's church, a hollow space in the middle of the city, before returning to the studio to share our journals and thoughts with one another. It was a lovely chance to see what other people had created and to reflect on what Hollow Spaces had meant and could now mean to all of us. It was very emotional and I wouldn't have wanted to leave if I hadn't been going back home to Little O! The whole workshop was a wonderful experience, and if you ever get the chance to take a class with Orly I think you should jump at it!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2368635373183863997.post-72916792206468315012015-08-02T13:33:00.000+01:002015-08-02T13:33:32.604+01:00It has been a long time since I last wrote a blog post. Since abandoning this little blog a few years ago there have been a lot of changes in my life. I have moved with my husband into a lovely little cottage near the sea. It has a sweet little garden with space for our chickens, and even roses by the door! It still needs some work but we are looking at it as a long-term project!
A few weeks after we moved in our beautiful baby girl was born. She has changed my life in the most wonderful ways, not least because I have learned my capacity to cope with sleep deprivation is greater than I ever imagined!

She has changed the way I look at the world, and made me excited about all the things I can share with her.
I'm getting to the end of my maternity leave now, and as she's getting older I'm finding I occasionally have a few moments to myself to get back into making things and art journalling. I've missed having somewhere to share what I've been up to, so I've decided to dip back into blogging in the hope that it will keep my creativity flowing once I'm back at work, and maybe even inspire some of you to stretch your creative muscles too! I look forward to sharing the journey with you...Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00419350350102980556noreply@blogger.com4
